Asher Gamedze w/ A Semblance

Asher Gamedze is a Cape Town-based South African drummer, composer, researcher and bandleader. His music is a profound blend of various musical traditions from Southern Africa, free improvisation and jazz as well as radical social and political engagement. Self-taught, Gamedze gained recognition over the years for his work on drums with artists such as Angel Bat Dawid, Nduduzo Makhatini and as a studio musician for many other South African musicians before releasing his highly acclaimed debut album Dialectic Soul in 2020. It was named one of the best jazz albums of the year by various publications, including the New York Times, and was followed by "Out Side Work" in 2022. On his latest album Turbulence and Pulse, released in 2023 as part of a special collaboration between International Anthem and Mushroom Hour Half Hour, he returns to the musicians and the political and historical issues of Dialectic Soul and gives them new meaning.
