Week-End Fest
Kahil El'Zabar / Moor Mother
Over the past 13 years, Cologne's Week-End Fest has repeatedly provided all visitors with unforgettable experiences. International artists have performed at the boutique festival, which has become known for its lovingly curated program and the projects initiated especially for the event. Names such as The Sun Ra Arkestra, Arthur Verocai, Joyce Moreno, Nu Genea, Gilberto Gil, Mulatu Astatke, Caterina Barbieri, Suzanne Ciani and Laurel Halo have performed at the festival, and the list of other luminaries who have taken part is too long to list here.
Week-End Fest's forward-thinking program has always been good for surprises, and this year promises to be no exception. The festival takes place from October 31 to November 2 at the Stadtgarten in Cologne and is another date you should mark in your calendar immediately.
Dizzie Gillespie called him “perhaps the best percussionist of all time”; Nina Simone, Cannonball Adderley and Stevie Wonder all had him in their bands; he was president of the Chicago AACM and was on friendly terms with the members of the Art Ensemble. Kahil El’Zabar, born in the Windy City in 1953, can surely claim numerous achievements—yet we can only really get close to the magic of the drummer, percussionist and exponent of traditional African music in the live situation of a concert. That’s when El’Zabar’s spiritual jazz comes into its own and becomes that unique art form that re-creates itself in every improvisation and interpretation. In concert he becomes the Spirit Gatherer.
Very few artists have made such a significant impression on the international music scene in recent years as Camae Ayewa. She shares her poetry, her art and her music with the world both as part of the free jazz ensemble Irreversible Entanglements and under her solo pseudonym Moor Mother. She raps over jagged sound landscapes, performs poetry and also takes to the stage as a medium. The award of “international artist of the year” at last year’s German Jazz Prize was completely warranted. Her most recent appearances in Cologne were at Brückenmusik, where she built an Afrofuturistic sound-art parkour, and as part of the Harvest Time project in honour of the free jazz legend Pharoah Sanders.
