Sustainability

The Stadtgarten Köln has been one of Europe's internationally recognised venues for contemporary and improvised music for almost 40 years. In this long history as a cultural centre, the Stadtgarten has always been committed not only to being a place of artistic expression, but also to taking responsibility for the environment and society.

Sustainability is far more than a buzzword for us - it is an integral part of our daily work. We endeavour to act in an ecologically and socially sustainable manner by conserving resources, promoting fair working conditions and seeing our cultural work as a contribution to a fairer and more environmentally conscious society.
The maxims of our actions are reflected in all areas of our activities: from the selection of materials and energy concepts to our collaboration with local partners and artists and initiatives that raise awareness of social and ecological issues in our community.

Ecological sustainability

We want to maximise the contribution that culture can make to environmental protection and constantly reduce our ecological footprint. To achieve this goal, we have already initiated and partially implemented many changes. Some measures are being planned and will be realised in the coming years.
In addition, we regularly evaluate whether the implemented measures are actually having the desired effect or need to be reconsidered and adapted. We add possible further measures and set timeframes for their implementation.
The various areas of work within which we want to initiate processes have been divided into ‘Buildings and technology’ and ‘Operating processes’ and are listed in detail under the following link (currently onnly available in German; English coming soon).

Social sustainability

At Stadtgarten Köln, we see social sustainability as the basis for a respectful and inclusive community. As a cultural venue, we want to be a safe space for all people - regardless of origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disabilities or other personal characteristics. Diversity is our strength and discrimination has no place here. We are committed to ensuring that every visit to our company is characterised by a sense of belonging, in which all voices are heard and valued. Our commitment to social sustainability is reflected not only in the way we treat each other, but also in our choice of partners and our support for projects that promote social justice and equal opportunities. We want to create a place where everyone can develop freely and feel comfortable, without fear of marginalisation or disadvantage.
Together, we have developed a Code of Conduct, which is an integral part of our house rules (currently onnly available in German; English coming soon).

Further training for transformation managers:

In spring 2024, one of our employees completed further training to become a transformation manager. The training, which was organised in cooperation with the Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Cologne's Climate Protection Coordination Office, the Green Culture Collective and the Sustainability Action Network, enables graduates to use the knowledge they have acquired to initiate and implement processes and projects in their institutions that serve as role models for the sector and beyond for a climate-friendly society.

Awareness training

Our employees regularly take part in awareness training courses in order to continuously educate themselves in the areas of diversity, inclusion and respectful interaction with one another. These training courses are an important part of our commitment to a respectful and non-discriminatory working environment. They not only impart important knowledge on social issues, but also promote a better understanding of the needs and perspectives of all people. In this way, we ensure that our team is always able to create a working environment characterised by empathy, mindfulness and mutual respect.
