45x45 Sessions feat. J.Rawls
J. RAWLS (Polar Ent. / OHIO) & JJ WHITEFIELD (Madlib Invazion / MUNICH)
Hosted by GU (Our Label / BREMEN) & ben* (turntable Jazz / COLOGNE)
On Thursday the 12th of last month and two days before our big second edition of the All Area SOUNDBALL with an incredible line-up full of surprises, we dive into the world of producers.
After the classic DJs and the tech-inspired NYC Block & Loft parties, we want to show you how classic producers choose their 45s. Constantly learning, understanding and sampling different styles from all times and places is another aspect of the 45 community.
For this edition, we've invited two incredible producers and DJs who are well known in the music scene and have helped shape it with their own flavor. Both unique and talented on their instruments and songwriting, they also show their eclectic taste as DJs as they mix some of the rarest and most obscure songs with sources of other people's beats and songs, also known as samples.
J.Rawls from OHIO is known for his smooth but banging beats and contributed to the very first song my brothers blackstarkeepfishing ever recorded, "Brown Skin Lady," with his flip of Gil Scott Heron's masterpiece "We Almost Lost Detroit." J Rawls also told me about 20 years ago about his latest material from the Liquid Crystal Project and the combination of JAZZ & HIP HOP interested me so much that I founded Turntablejazz in 2005 and realized two 45s with special edits myself.
JJ Whitefield is a legendary guitarist from Munich and many know him since his early days as the founder of POETS OF RHYTHM, who brought vintage funk back to the world and inspired many new labels and artists to make it sound raw and fuzzy again. JJ Whitefield is also known for his other projects, including Karl Hector Malcouns, the Whitefield brothers or members of legendary bands like Embry and Ebo Taylor. He has just started to release his own solo records as well and will show his versatile taste and his 45s!
