This can't be true: Heiner Wiberny is 80 years old? His musical scent is far too fresh and vital, his wonderful sound on alto saxophone and flute far too present, his friendly smile far too engaging when he thanks the enthusiastic applause after one of his solo outings. And yet, what has not come together in Heiner Wiberny's long career? Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Pavel Blatný, symphonic new music, Association P.C., Jasper van't Hof, Markus Stockhausen, Paul Kuhn, Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble, BAP, Hiram Bullock, Joe Zawinul and Randy Brecker and - of course - all of Wiberny's (predominantly) leading roles in the major orchestras from Harald Banter to Kurt Edelhagen and Peter Herbolzheimer to the WDR Big Band, of which he was the lead alto player for almost three decades.
Heiner Wiberny bid farewell to the WDR Big Band in 2009 with the memorable concert "Heiner's Music" in Cologne's Stadtgarten, where he is now returning as a guest of Paul Heller. And how could it be otherwise: not only as a celebrated jubilarian, but also as the first alto player in the Paul Heller Big Band, in which Wiberny (not only) meets up with old companions from the WDR Big Band. Everything is set for a grandiose birthday celebration!
