Premiere and CD release "Ninety
Paul Heller invites. Whoever invites someone, invites good acquaintances, but above all friends. Even if you haven't seen each other for a long time, it's as if you only met yesterday. Paul Heller and Ack van Rooyen have cultivated their musical and private friendship for three and a half decades now. The Dutch flugelhorn player and trumpeter, who met the saxophonist in 1985 at a Wolfgang Engstfeld workshop, became one of Heller's most important mentors. And they share many things. Both have always had close contacts with the scene in their respective neighboring countries, working with big bands determines a large part of their careers, and both are part of a jazz music fraternity: trumpeter and arranger Jerry van Rooyen, who has since passed away, was chief conductor of the formation that Heller will join ten years after Jerry's departure, the WDR Big Band, from 1985 to 95.
Ack turned ninety on January 1, 2020, and Paul was also present at the birthday concert in Amsterdam's Bimhuis. The current CD "Ninety" was recorded with the same line-up that will also perform this evening and present music from the album: a bi-national sextet with three musicians from both countries. Guitarist Peter Tiehuis played in two big bands, which are also closely connected to Ack's professional life, Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass and the Skymasters. Pianist Hubert Nuss is one of the oldest and most frequently invited friends of the host, Paul's brother Ingmar is a permanent member of the NDR Big Band as bassist and drummer Hans Dekker is a colleague from the WDR Big Band. The repertoire awakens memories: Reminiscences of the career of an exceptional musician, whose playful elegance and unique tone still fascinate today.
