CGNYC - Cologne Meets New York: David Leon
In the series "CGNYC - Cologne meets New York City", Florian Herzog invites New York musicians to create exciting concerts in a first meeting with Cologne musicians.
David Leon is a Cuban-American saxophonist, composer and improviser from Brooklyn whose music combines sound research, Cuban folklore, jazz and microtonality. The Wire called his latest trio album Bird's Eye "stately and buoyant, intricate and sly", PostGenre spoke of "unlike anything else". As a Jerome Artist Resident (Roulette 2024/25) and CINTAS fellow, he works on cross-genre projects such as A Divine Echo - a mixture of chamber music and puppet theater. He plays in formations such as Thumbs (with Yuma Uesaka), Locomotive (with Adam O'Farrill) and a quartet with Brandon Seabrook. He has performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, The Stone and Teatro Nacional de Cuba, among others.
David Leon (alto saxophone), Weston Olencki (trombone, electronics), Elias Stemeseder (piano, synthesizer), Florian Herzog (bass)
