CGNYC w/ Kate Gentile
As part of the "CGNYC - Cologne meets New York City" series, Florian Herzog invites New York musicians to collaborate with Cologne-based artists in an initial gathering to create exciting concerts.
Kate Gentile is a Brooklyn-based drummer and composer who, since moving to New York in 2011, has performed and recorded with a wide range of renowned musicians, including Anthony Braxton, Kris Davis, Michael Formanek, Matt Mitchell, and John Zorn. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, she studied at the Eastman School of Music.
As a bandleader, she has created a body of work described as highly detailed and designed to inspire multi-layered improvisation. Her most important releases include *Mannequins* (2017), the triple album *Find Letter X* (Pi Recordings, 2023) with her band of the same name, and *biome i.i* (Obliquity, 2023) — a commissioned work for the International Contemporary Ensemble. Together with pianist Matt Mitchell, she also leads the band Snark Horse and the label Obliquity Records.
In 2024, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, one of the highest honors in the U.S. cultural sector.
