Doppel-Solokonzert
In the hands of Chris Ryan Williams, the trumpet is both tool and material: breath, timbre, electronics, collages - all are good for creating strange and familiar soundscapes. As part of the new music scene in Brooklyn, a young, politicized guard that thinks the collective as much as they play it (Patrick Shiroishi, Wendy Eisenberg, Luke Stewart, Lester St-Louis), and as a connoisseur of both the underground scene and the institutions of the art world, Chris Williams blurs categories - improvisation, drone, ambient - and shapes mental landscapes in his slow solos. He intended Odu: Vibration II, his latest album, to be "like a descent into an imaginary cave, guided by a quest for wonder, dizzying grandeur, ecstatic transcendence, exploring resonance and the body's response to it." Like a dive into Plato's cave, where each listener is confronted with their own shadow sides and can make their way through the labyrinth to find their light.
The evening will open with a solo set by multi-instrumentalist and electronic producer Koshiro Hino. Hino is one of the leading figures of the avant-garde scene in Osaka, known among other things as the frontman of the minimal rock band Goat. His unique, highly improvised live sets using tape encompass a wide range of styles, often with a particular focus on percussive elements - from danceable techno to much more abstract and experimental noise excursions.
Koshiro Hino was last with us in 2024 with KAKUHAN, his duo project with cellist Yuki Nakagawa. He also runs the label "Birdfriend", which presents underground musicians from Japan and around the world, and the label for contemporary and electronic music "NAKID". His major compositions include the hybrid orchestra "Virginal Variations" (2016), which combines classical instruments with electronic sounds, and "GEIST" (2018-), a fusion of numerous loudspeakers and a moving full-body performance. Since 2019, Hino has been collaborating with the taiko performance group Kodo, in particular on the music film "Shiver" (2021, directed by Toshiaki Toyoda). Hino is a member of the ANTIBODIES Collective of musician and director Toshio Kajiwara and dancer and choreographer Yoko Higashino. In 2023, he performed his new composition "Phase Transition" together with Masayoshi Fujita and Ken Furudate (from Dumb Type) at the Rohm Theater Kyoto. That year he also composed the music for the feature film "The Invisible Fight" (2024) by Estonian film director Rainer Sarnet.
