Conny Bauer & Kalle Kalima

Stellar line-up in Cologne: the winner of the most important German jazz prize, the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize 2023, Conny Bauer, born in 1943, in a cross-generational duo with the renowned Berlin guitarist Kalle Kalima, born in 1973. The exceptional trombonist Bauer, an influential luminary of GDR jazz, has a long history with the constantly changing Berlin improvisation scene. With his probably most genre-breaking duo release Bauer / Kalima, this connection takes on a new, contemporary dimension. The historic spirit of free music meets the broad musical spectrum of Kalima, who, as a long-standing, integral part of the diverse Berlin scene, reveals influences from jazz, rock and new music. The Bauer / Kalima duo can be described as a blueprint for what can generally be attributed to the great art of instant composing: with an incomparable sensitivity for dynamics and dramaturgy, sound worlds are created in real time that move innovatively between the tradition of avant-garde jazz and the aesthetics of contemporary art music in the spirit of creative music. A musical encounter as a dialog for trombone and electric guitar that could not be more exemplary for the European melting pot of improvised music that is Berlin.
