Florian Ross „Architexture“
Music for jazz quartet & wind ensemble
What do the architects Oscar Niemeyer, le Corbusier, Renzo Piano and May Lin have in common with music? Both architecture and music are art forms based on constructive rules that call for bending.
Jazz is particularly close to architecture: clear lines, forms and contrasted with wild excursions into improvisation. The attachment to tradition and the rupture live so closely together in hardly two other forms of expression.
Similar to the tension between composition-improvisation and "classical"-jazz, Florian Ross deals with the disciplines of photography and architecture, which invite the gentle breaking of traditions, but still deeply rooted in the structure. All this meets here - Florian Ross invites you to wander through constructs of music and to discover structures of sound.
The combination of woodwind ensemble and rhythm section, unprecedented in jazz history, represents an ideal platform for this idea.
Above all, the solo woodwind group offers the opportunity to weave the two ensembles closer together and thus prevent the classical ensemble from becoming an accompanying carpet.
Altogether a sonorous project full of contradictions, which will find their exciting resolution in the music.
Architecture will appear on Naxos in the 2nd half of 2019.
