Jazz at JAKI: Best Of Blue Note
The question of what is jazz and what is not is always hotly debated. There are no questions about the records that the Blue Note Records label released in the 50s and 60s. More jazz is hardly possible.
The producer and founder of the label Alfred Lion - a Jew who emigrated from Berlin to New York - managed to create a sound in which the typical jazz elements of swing, blues and improvisation blended perfectly. This was achieved by providing the musicians with optimal recording conditions, a great deal of creative freedom and influence on all stages of record production. The resulting recordings by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Sheila Jordan and Lee Morgan, for example, still fill the jazz playlists of streaming providers and radio stations today.
But as beautiful as the recordings are, this music only has a very special effect when it is played live in a club. To this end, Cologne-based saxophonist Ole Sinell has put together a top-class German-American band. The five studied connoisseurs of the Blue Note sound celebrate jazz (and transatlantic relations!).
Menzel Mutzke (trumpet), Ole Sinell (tenor saxophone), Billy Test (piano), Cliff Schmitt (bass), Dominik Raab (drums)
