Jazz at JAKI: Elke Bartholomäus & Ensemble
Trained in Cologne and New York, vocalist and composer Elke Bartholomäus has long been a constant on the Cologne music scene, working alongside Ralf Werner (DIE KULTURTECHNIKER) and recording for the WDR Studio Akustische Kunst, among others. Her work crosses genre and genre boundaries - always with a focus on exploring the limits and possibilities of the human voice and its role in experimental improvised music and performance. Her relationship to traditional vocal jazz has always been a fractured one, and a reason and starting point for her explorations towards restructuring and breaking down the boundaries of outdated song forms.
Open text structures meet composed minimalist approaches and modal elements and are condensed into floating to driving mood fields, which in turn become the starting point for spontaneous reinterpretation with improvisational means. In doing so, Bartholomäus uses her voice as an instrumental texture and in this way creates multifaceted, often fragile soundscapes.
Her debut album "To Speak" will be released on October 12, 2023 on JazzHaus Musik.
Elke Bartholomäus (vocals, composition), Niklas Roever (piano), Jonas Stuppin (guitar), Fabian Berghofer (double bass), Simon Bräumer (drums)
