Jazz at Jaki: Schultze Ehwald Rainey
Seven Whites - CD Release Concert
If you thought white was simply white, the new album by Schultze Ehwald Rainey can convince you musically that the darkest as well as the very brightest can find its place in the manifold gradations of brightness. On "Seven Whites" the three musicians (Peter Ehwald sax, Stefan Schultze, piano and Tom Rainey dr) draw a complex musical structure whose brilliance and depth lie precisely in the elaboration of the shades. Here three strong soloists find each other, whose individual playing skills are dedicated to playing with and around each other. In the perfection of leaving space for each other, the listeners become witnesses of an emerging musical commonality like observers of an emerging painting.
Crucial are the shadings and subtleties with which the musicians immerse themselves in a rhythm that is sometimes energetic joint searching, sometimes contrapuntal pulsing, and then dissolves in a mutual framing. This music develops great pull beyond simple "black and white painting".
