Jazz at JAKI: Zana Morana

Punk meets electro, contrasted with the sound world of contemporary and improvised jazz, while rock power and unbridled energy are juxtaposed with delicate and fragile beauty. The Zana Morana trio around violinist and composer Zuzana Leharová opens a new chapter for the violin in jazz. Sometimes melancholic and dreamy, sometimes nervous, biting and ecstatic, Zuzana Leharová, Andreas Wahl on electric guitar and drummer Jo Beyer celebrate different musical styles without committing themselves to one. This results in sound nuances between rock and experiment, grounded blues and noisy metal impressions, which ultimately merge into a compact, dense sound.

Inspired by the female deity of Slavic mythology, Morana, Zuzana Leharová opens a new chapter in an ongoing personal and creative process of the violin in jazz. The omission of bass-like instruments plays an essential role in this trio and inspires the band to create something new.
