Jonas & JAKI: Jesse van Ruller & Dario Deidda
The drummer Jonas Burgwinkel invites you to a musically diverse evening with his concert series. In each edition of Jonas & JAKI, outstanding musicians from the Cologne jazz scene meet an international guest whose music is presented on the respective evening.
Jesse van Ruller began his studies with Wim Overgaauw at the Hilversum Conservatory in 1990 and graduated with top marks in 1995. In the same year, he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition, making him the first European to win this prestigious prize. The jury included John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall and Pat Martino.
He has recorded two CDs under his own name and plays with his own trio and quartet (with Karel Boehlee, Frans van Geest and Martijn Vink). He can also be heard with many other bands, including the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, the Michiel Borstlap Group, the Piet Noordijk Quintet and in duo with guitarist Maarten van der Grinten.
Jesse has shared the stage and the studio with musicians such as Tom Harrell, George Duke, Christian McBride, Mike Stern, Kenny Washington, SfeQ, Benjamin Herman, Larry Goldings and Idris Muhammed. Together with Peter Erskine, he was a soloist in "Blood on The Floor" by British composer Mark Anthony Turnage with the Asko Ensemble and with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle.
His third CD as bandleader, Catch!, on which Roy Hargrove is represented with three compositions, was nominated for an Edison Award in the jazz category. Jesse van Ruller was also nominated for a Bird Award in 2001 in the category of talent deserving of wide recognition. Jesse van Ruller is the main study director at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Dario Deidda started playing the drums at the age of 6, but soon fell in love with the double bass and began to take his music studies seriously. He graduated from the conservatory with a degree in double bass, but expanded his musical knowledge by studying the electric bass and piano. He describes himself as an "all-round" musician, but jazz is at the heart of his musical world. Dario is a connoisseur of traditional jazz and American songbooks, extending his knowledge to contemporary jazz trends. Despite his great fondness for the double bass, Dario's unique style is evident on the electric bass, which has led to widespread recognition of this rarely appreciated instrument in jazz. In recent years, Dario has mainly used acoustic and semi-acoustic instruments in search of a truly unique sound.
Dario Deidda has performed as a sideman and has recorded over 60 CDs. He has given numerous music seminars on bass techniques and jazz improvisation at music schools, conservatories and universities throughout Italy and worldwide. He has been teaching jazz electric bass at the Salerno Conservatory since 2004. His seminar at the Berklee School in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2006 was a great success.
