Judith Hill

Judith Hill has established herself as one of the most dynamic and versatile artists in the music industry. From her breakthrough on “The Voice” to collaborations with legends such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Prince—Judith’s remarkable talent has earned her worldwide critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. Her music effortlessly blends elements of soul, funk, R&B, and pop, creating a sound that is entirely her own.

‍Letters From A Black Widow follows Hill’s 2021 album Baby, I’m Hollywood!, which was highly praised by critics and described by SPIN as “a funk-rock-soul banger.”
Although Hill plays many of the instruments herself—including the electric guitar, which she has taught herself to play since her last studio release—this project is not strictly a solo endeavor. It builds on the unshakable musical foundation she has relied on for most of her life: Hill’s band includes her parents, bassist Robert “Peewee” Hill and keyboardist Michiko Hill. She is also supported by John Staten (drums and percussion), Daniel Chae (strings), and a group of outstanding friends who provide backing vocals.

Letters from a Black Widow is a powerful battle cry—an album-length passion play of soul, funk, and gospel that is spectacularly composed, arranged, and performed.

Anyone who has followed Judith Hill’s story will recognize “Letters from a Black Widow” as an album title that leaves one speechless. The term “Black Widow,” coined by the tabloid press, emerged following the deaths by overdose of her two star collaborators, Michael Jackson and Prince. It became a slur hurled at the acclaimed artist by internet trolls, fueling conspiracy theories and shaming campaigns—a trauma that nearly brought her career to an end, a career that also includes a Grammy for her role in the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet from Stardom.”

“For years, the ‘Black Widow’ was such a dark presence in my life—too threatening and intimidating to even talk about,” says Hill. But a year into the pandemic, she had the time and space for a profound reckoning. “The forced standstill allowed me to go to a deeper place, to really let it all sink in, and to figure out what my core is, what I really needed to talk about. I realized that I had the courage and strength to face all of this—to stay true to my innermost self, to immerse myself in the entire experience, and to transform an ocean of darkness into expression.”
