KOKOKO! is a collective that was born in the capital Kinshasa of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a creative collision of several artists who came together at a block party. It consists of musical instrument inventors from the Ngwaka district, the electronics producer débruit, Makara Bianko (alias the Lingwala devil) and his dancers who come from the Lingwala district. They are known to wire materials like metal, cans, engine parts and plastic containers from the streets of Kinshasa to lively sculptural dance music. Their distorted fast rhythms and spontaneous lo-fi electro sounds provide the chaotic soundtrack for the hard yet highly creative reality of the city.
MARK ERNESTUS imported techno to Germany, injected it with dub, and then pushed back to its roots. Since 2013, the Hardwax operator, who together with Moritz von Oswald and the projects Basic Channel, Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound has played a major role in shaping the Berlin sound, has been releasing music from the West African Mbalax sound together with musicians* from the Senegalese collective Jeri-Jeri. This, in turn, led to the even bigger and much more powerful NDAGGA RHYTHM FORCE, which released the album "Yermande" in 2016 and has been knocking the dust off the world's stages with its Sabar drums ever since. Polyrhythmic groove psychedelic here, full-bodied and soulful bass inserts there, over it Mbene Diatta Seck's echoed vocals - Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force brings Dub and Techno back to their roots, and lets the world share in it.
Within the framework of "Complex Collaboration" IN BETWEEN SPACES presents very different collaborations between musicians* from different regions of Africa and Europe. Conversations and interviews make artistic motifs, the roles and dynamics in the artistic process, the challenges of collaboration, their reception in different cultural contexts and their economy transparent.
