Multiphonics Festival: Rolf Kühn Quartett „Yellow & Blue“
The clarinetist Rolf Kühn, born in 1929 (!), became the international figurehead of German jazz from the mid-1950s. His career had already begun ten years earlier in Leipzig, and since then neither he nor his musical curiosity stood still for a single moment in his exciting life. Influenced by swing big band as much as by bebop, Kühn plays modern and avant-garde no less virtuously, while enriching even light music no less professionally and free of airs and graces. His current quartet Yellow + Blue is a further step on the many adventurous journeys of Rolf Kühn: sensitive, delicate, cosmopolitan, inexhaustible in terms of sound painting. Kühn's cover version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" is almost ideal for this: a sound monument of fragile beauty, empathetic and full of inner luminosity. With Frank Chastenier, Lisa Wulff and Tupac Mantilla, Rolf Kühn has wonderful, like-minded comrades-in-arms.
