NICA exchange × CJW: Damian Dalla Torre – People Pleaser

The Italian-born, Leipzig-based saxophonist, composer, and producer Damian Dalla Torre is one of the most exciting voices of a new generation bridging contemporary jazz, ambient, and experimental pop. In his music, he combines acoustic instruments with subtle electronic processing, creating soundscapes of great atmospheric density and emotional depth. At the very latest since his album I Can Feel My Dreams (2024)—which was named the best contemporary album of the year by The Guardian—Dalla Torre has garnered international attention. His work has taken him to stages across Europe, Japan, and the U.S., revealing an artist who increasingly conceives of sound as an environment and an experience.

With his new album People Pleaser, Damian Dalla Torre now opens another chapter. Emerging from a phase of growing artistic self-assurance, the music revolves around questions of expectation, pressure, and personal development, without losing any of its openness. The title is deliberately ambiguous, inviting listeners to develop their own associations. At the heart of the album is his collaboration with other musicians, whose diverse sonic languages merge within Dalla Torre’s compositions to form a finely woven whole. This collaborative energy also shapes the live experience: At Cologne Jazzweek, he will perform in a trio with harpist Babett Niclas and guitarist Markus Rom. Together, they create an intimate yet expansive sound that bridges organic improvisation and subtle electronics.

This concert is the result of a collaboration between Cologne Jazzweek, NICA artist development, and the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige.
