This music lays bare the voice and the cello, exposing a golden intuition that reaches beyond the confines of given structures. It is a mesh of the finest professional craftsmanship and a warm intimacy with one's instrument. Textures emerge. Tensions emerge. Contrasts flow. Subtleties emerge. The intuitive interplay of Casey and Elisabeth, both experienced in the field of exploratory improvisation, unites sound, space and performance. Together they draw from the vast spectrum of sound available to each as they ebb and flow, breathe and move symbiotically in the layering of sounds, simultaneously autonomous yet resolutely connected in sound and space.

Cansu Tanrikulu / Sofia Borges

Cansu Tanrıkulu is a singing multimedia artist, composer and improviser from Berlin. She is one of the busiest young voices in the European creative music scene and leads or has co-led several bands including Melez (with Jim Black & Elias Stemeseder), MeoW (with Jim Black, Liz Kosack & Dan Peter Sunderland), Tanrıkulu/Cohen/Delius (with Greg Cohen & Tobias Delius) and Last Chance to Misbehave (with Julia Hülsmann & Mia Knop Jacobsen).
Her elastic vocals, broad stylistic vocabulary and wide-ranging approach to melodies and lyric-based improvisations have made her a sought-after vocalist in a variety of genres. She actively performs on prestigious platforms in Europe, including Jazzfestival Saalfelden, Leipziger Jazztage, Jazzfest Berlin, Barga Jazz Festival, Enjoy Jazz Festival, Belgrade Jazz Festival and many more. As a sideman (Max Andrzejewski's Hütte & Guests Playing Robert Wyatt's Music, James Banner's USINE, Stine Janvin's Chords for Calling) she regularly tours Europe and performs at venues including Porgy & Bess (Vienna), Stadtgarten (Cologne), Birmingham Symphony Hall and Maxim Gorki Theater (Berlin).
As a composer and conceptual thinker, Tanrıkulu's first instinct is to give musical form to difficult-to-imagine themes and to work with extraordinary creative personalities. Her projects are regularly recognized through cultural grants and performed at prestigious institutions. She is currently developing her career with a variety of projects and working as a recording and performing artist for established international artists (including Anthony Braxton's Sonic Genome in 2019 for Jazzfest Berlin).
She is a recipient of the Karl Hofer Gesselschaft Jazz Prize for Soloists (2019) and the Elsa Neumann Scholarship - UdK (2021).

Sofia Borges
Sofia Borges is a percussionist, composer and improviser who has made a name for herself by participating in a wide range of international projects. As a solo artist and in collaboration with a wide range of international artists from the fields of new music, improvised music, world music, theatre and dance, she has performed at a variety of international festivals around the globe. For her compositions and performances, she brings together traditional and custom-made instruments and electronic configurations.
Borges has been playing drums since her youth and received her early training in drums, percussion, jazz, chamber and orchestral music at the Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional (Portugal). She then continued her studies in composition, computer music and multimedia at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Portugal) and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.

In addition to her compositional and performance activities, Sofia Borges is also an enthusiastic educator, committed to inspiring the youngest generations with new music and aesthetics, extended techniques, improvisation and sound art. In her composition workshops she initiates children and young people in the exploration of new music and sounds, focusing on the relationship between composition, sound, graphic notation and visuality, using both traditional means and animated scores.
