There are words that are like songs: they carry a mood that cannot be translated. "Talvez" is one such word. Portuguese for "maybe" - and yet so much more. It is a state of limbo, hope, threat, melancholy. Maybe you'll come back, maybe not. Maybe you still love, maybe you never will. With "Talvez", Ão are back, the Belgian band that has turned the European pop landscape upside down over the past two years with a radical gentleness.
After the acclaimed debut "Ao Mar" - an album that not only had the ocean in its title, but in every pore - the group is taking the next step. Frontwoman Brenda Corijn, guitarist Siebe Chau, sound inventor Jolan Decaestecker and percussionist Bert Peyffers have condensed their sound: Saudade, electronica, indie, folk - and a voice that glides effortlessly between Portuguese and English. A voice that doesn't sing, but narrates, entices and sometimes warns.
Talvez" was created on tour, on the move, far from home. Brenda was in Brazil to gain distance - "I said: I can only let go if I tell myself that I will never return." She wrote to Siebe, who briefly thought she was gone forever. But she came back. And this return became a song: flooded with sunlight from the charango, a small South American guitar, and yet with a darkness beneath the surface. "Talvez você se lembra da minha escuridão" - perhaps you only remember my darkness. It's music about what remains when you think you've long since escaped.
And then there's the stage. Anyone who has seen Ão live is talking about an experience, not a concert. Four people, a cosmos of sound that spreads out like a warm breeze - and turns into a storm the next moment. At festivals such as Reeperbahn or Pukkelpop, they have shown that they don't just play, they breathe stories. Sometimes intimate and fragile, sometimes danceable to the point of ecstasy.
2026 will be a year of decisions - maybe, maybe not. One thing is certain: Ão are coming to Germany for three concerts in the spring.
