Sylvie Courvoisier Trio

With each concert and album, the modus operandi of this glorious trio becomes clearer - Sylvie Courvoisier, Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen play a shifting music that is by turns highly detailed and ambiguously open-ended. The music Courvoisier writes is strictly organized and requires the precision of the ensemble, as a few thorny unison heads demonstrate. But the music also harbors a mysterious, dreamlike quality that can emerge at any time, triggered by a wistful ostinato or a moonlit piano arpeggio stubbornly repeated, or by a quiet episode that underscores the depth of the trio's sonic space.
They also do the good things we appreciate jazz for - the joyful swinging, the coming together when they make complex material sing, and the flying apart when the players explore it on their own terms.
