Tom-Tom Discotec presents: Tropical Sound Clash Vol. 1
w/ Domingo de Cumbia, Süperdisko, Milieu Tropicale und Frente Salsero
With the new late-night series Tom-Tom Discotec, JAKI is creating a space in which Cologne's diverse music scene comes together: danceable, cosmopolitan and groove-oriented. To kick things off, four crews will compete against each other (but in all friendship). They will play music inspired by their respective diasporas and add their own musical signature. The clash will be hosted by journalist and radio presenter Maike de Buhr.
Acid kebab or disco hamam? SÜPERDISKO is manifesto & ecstasy: Anatolian funk meets club beats, Halay & Dabke break boundaries, SWANA sounds are resurrected in a re-edit and new post-migrant hits make you throw up your arms. Burakete, the mastermind behind süperdisko, has been shaping the scene for 15 years, breaking open white bubbles & bringing diaspora to the center. Loud, wild, unmistakable and always full of love.
Milieu Tropicale stands for openness, diversity and tolerance. Accordingly, there are no musical boundaries. It is a journey through the club sounds of the world, a deep dive into different eras and styles. From funa to SWANA grooves to tropicalia boogie, everything is possible.
Frente Salsero is a collective of DJs, record collectors and cultural workers in Cologne, with roots in and a strong connection to Latin America. The four members of Frente mix salsa, merengue, boogaloo and cumbia, with salsa in particular becoming an expression of identity and resistance in Spanish Harlem in the 1970s. The Frente Salsero consciously refers to this tradition, as it sees salsa not only as dance music, but also as a cultural and political language that creates community and helps overcome borders!
Domingo de Cumbia is the mother of cumbia events in Cologne and NRW and has been bringing the pulsating rhythms of Latin America to the city for years. With national and international guest DJs such as Edna Martínez, René Gamez, Kumbia Boruka and Turbo Sonidero, the collective brings people, cultures and generations together. Cumbia at Domingo de Cumbia means community, joie de vivre and pure musical energy.
