An event of the Akademie der Künste der Welt (Academy of the Arts of the World)

Pop is also politics by other means. While the German government finds it difficult to integrate double identities into passports and the EU maintains restrictive visa regulations, fusing transcontinental life experiences is something that a music style developed in recent years in Paris does effortlessly. This pop music hybrid called Afrotrap has many subgenres. This musical style connects life between the continents for a new generation of French Africans. Afrotrap is no longer just music from the community for the community, in each respective immigrant suburb of Paris, like it was in the case of the Ivoirian music and dance form Coupé-Decalé, for example. Afrotrap is also appealing to the non-hyphenated young French by virtue of its combining of different influences. Dedicated to this phenomenon is the project Un truc d’ouf (in English roughly ‘crazy stuff’) by the performance group La Fleur, founded in late 2016 by Monika Gintersdorfer and Franck Edmond Yao a.k.a. Gadoukou la Star. With La Fleur, the years-long collaboration of the dance theater of Gintersdorfer/Klaßen has been internationalized, broadened and rejuvenated. In 2018 at the Théâtre de la Commune in Aubervilliers, they created their first work (Pièce d’actualité – Trop d’inspiration dans le 93), in which young people from the Département Seine-Saint-Denis had the chance to practice with their idols – the Ivoirian dance stars Ordinateur, Annick Choco and Gadoukou la Star, who are now part of La Fleur.
The newly developed performance Un truc d'ouf is a follow up to this previous work – perhaps also with some of the young dancers who, in a three-day workshop given by La Fleur in Cologne, will not just encounter French African pop but also work on a new hybrid style.
In addition, the performance will be flanked by film footage that was taken, for example, during a research trip to Abidjan and in the cités of Paris. La Fleur wants to illustrate the global pop-cultural feedback effects – also to be able to better understand and archive the complex processes of cultural exchange.
