After her second great solo album Where Water Travels Home (Jazzhaus Records) and the internationally acclaimed collaboration with the Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen on the ECM album What Was Said (Annual German Record Critics' Award), German-Afghan singer Simin Tander opens a new door in her artistic career. Unfading (Jazzhaus Records/ in-akustik) is the title of her new work, which she recorded with a freshly formed and unusually cast quartet. The artist effortlessly weaves the creative, female flow of a grounded songwriting with echoes of the archaic, combines the power of songs full of emotional depth with passages of improvisational freedom.
"Everlasting", that would probably be the obvious translation for the album title. But for Simin Tander, there is more to the term "Unfading": "It is something that was and is again, that goes forward, shines in new splendour, has an infinity. I associate it with a gentle, endless, feminine movement," she says, "It's an image, not a concrete statement, just as my lyrics are more associative. The female perspective, she undoubtedly plays a leading lyrical role in this cycle of 15 pieces. She is, Tander says, the "spirit of the album".
Simin Tander (vocals, composition), Jasser Haj Youssef (viola d'amore), Björn Meyer (bass, effects), Samuel Rohrer (drums)
