When in the mid-1990s in Norway, under the aegis of Bugge Wesseltoft, it was time to think about a few "New Conceptions of Jazz" in order to get out of the cage of the "Sound of the North" that had become a cliché, the sensations came on a monthly basis. Jazzmen allied themselves with DJs and producers, new clubs were opened and made undogmatic programs, independent record labels provided the platforms for this explosion of creativity. Guitarist Eivind Aarset and live sampling artist and producer Jan Bang are at the core of this upsurge. Aarset, who started out musically in a heavy metal band, released one of the first albums on "Jazzland" with "Électronique Noir" (1998); Jan Bang, who previously worked as a producer at the interface of pop and techno, was still responsible for "drum programming" on Wesseltoft's second "New Conception of Jazz" album "Sharing" (1998). In the new millennium Aarset and Bang, strengthened by the many encounters around the famous "Punkt" festival, became almost a kind of team, working together not only on their own albums but also on albums by Ketil Björnstad, Dhafer Youssef, Jon Hassell, Arve Henriksen, Tigran Hamasyan or - most recently - Dark Star Safari. While the introverted sound tinkerer Aarset disappears as an instrumentalist behind filigree, abstract sound clouds, Bang seeks the presence of the highest attention and presence of mind in his live sampling, in order to grasp the material with his counterpart, which he can transform into the unmistakable "dot" aesthetics.
