zamus early music festival: Lantana Camara - Memento Mori
Barocke Todessehnsucht in Musik und Philosophie
Death was omnipresent in the 17th and 18th centuries due to wars, epidemics and famine. The high infant mortality rate and low life expectancy also made people constantly aware of the transience of life. However, the Christian message of salvation promised eternal life after death. The hope for this was reflected in the expression of a pronounced longing for death. Many composers dedicated themselves to this in the field of tension between contemplative intimacy and overwhelming emotionality. The Lantana Camara ensemble explores this theme musically, while forensic psychiatrist Dr. Nahlah Saimeh introduces the topic philosophically and in terms of intellectual history.
