Mia Couto has also been linked to the Nobel Prize in recent years - by the betting agencies as a promising candidate. The 68-year-old is regarded as one of the most exciting voices in African literature. Born in Mozambique to Portuguese parents, he was involved in the liberation front that fought against the Portuguese occupation. He experienced the horror of the War of Independence at first hand. His attempt to remember the repressed runs through his literature. In his latest novel, "The Cartographer of Oblivion", the disaster of history is combined with the misery that man may have conjured up in nature.
While a poet examines the files of the colonial secret police in order to find out something about his father, a cyclone approaches the coast. "For thirty years, Couto has been telling the history and untold stories of Mozambique in his works," wrote Le Monde about this masterpiece: "But never as profoundly as in this novel. A multi-layered, multi-voiced narrative in which he interweaves documents, memories and forgetting." You're not risking much if you put your money on Mia Couto.
