Cologne Jazzweek: Ingrid Laubrock & Marta Warelis
An exciting and intimate duo project by two of today's leading European-American female improvisers is on the program with a concert by the German, Brooklyn-based saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and the Polish, Amsterdam-based pianist Marta Warelis. Laubrock, a saxophonist and composer who teaches at the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, Columbia University and the New School, is at the center of today's Brooklyn avant-garde, finding new ways to organize and situate improvised music. She explores the boundaries of musical frontiers and creates multi-layered, often evocative soundscapes. Warelis grew up in Poland, studied in the Netherlands and has lived in Amsterdam since 2014, where she plays in chamber music improvisation ensembles and duo formations, among others. In 2022, she released her solo album A Grain Of Earth. Jazz critic Kevin Whitehead raved that Warelis can bang out block chords, rattle strings, spatulate keys and unwind meandering, singing right-hand lines. This very special duo promises improvisational art at the highest level.
