12-18 August 2023
The journey continues. Also in 2023 unique artists:inside of the Cologne, German and international jazz scene will be experienced on the many stages throughout the city. Whether in the Stadtgarten, LOFT, King Georg, Open Air, the Ehrenfeld-Clubs or our new venues in the Filmhaus, the Klaus von Bismarck Sendesaal in the WDR or the Philharmonie - new encounters will arise and new stories will be written. Be part of the festival summer 2023 and dive into the wonderful world of improvised music!
The birthplace of the musician collective Headless Society was the Cologne bar Acephale in 2019. Its operator Dima Oboukhov, who is himself a music connoisseur and writer, spoke with pianist Philip Zoubek and saxophonist Leonhard Huhn about his idea - and with five other companions, the two started their monthly concert series at Acephale, which was called Headless Society and also gave the seven-member collective its name. The goal four years ago was to develop a new electronic, mainly improvised club music - with modified Gameboys, junk guitar, old Echolette tape echo, brand new synthesizer, microphones, electronified saxophone, a bass player and two drummers on stage. At the Cologne Jazzweek concert in the Jaki under the Stadtgarten, Argentine cellist Violeta García will be there as a guest, who, similar to the seven Cologne collectivists, ignores boundaries between genres and genres and is aesthetically open with the material.
The complete program of all participating venues can be found at the Cologne Jazzweek website.
Philip Zoubek (synthesizer), Christian Lorenzen (synthesizer, guitar), Kenn Hartwig (gameboy/circuit bending), David Helm (bass, violin), Dominik Mahnig (drums), Thomas Sauerborn (drums), Violeta García (cello)
