NICA live: Philip Zoubek Trio

Philip Zoubek has achieved a unique position within contemporary European jazz with his playing on the prepared piano. For his new and highly differentiated sound language developed with it, not only reference greats from jazz history form a background flicker, but also representatives of contemporary new music.

Zoubek is an unconventional pianist who has dedicated himself for a good four years to what is probably the most conventional jazz formation: the piano trio. With double bassist David Helm and drummer Dominik Mahnig, he is always gaining new sides to it and released "Outside" in 2018. One critic named it his album of the year, another spoke of the best piano trio in a long time. The trio proved to be the ideal format for these three musicians, who continue to refine their common language with a great sense of adventure and in intensive work processes in a collective process. In doing so, they draw from a large pool of material, which they reinterpret in dense interactivity and allow to flow into a seamlessly merging flow of composition and improvisation.
