Artist statement:

"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of our European Tour in March / April 2024. This is due to unforeseen illness encountered by Idris Ackamoor, the leader of the pyramids.
We know that this will bring disappointment not only to us but to all our fans and event organisers and promoters of the concerts.
We hope you can understand our disappointment, but for health reasons Idris has been advised by his doctor to refrain from Travelling / Touring until he has fully recovered from this non-invasive out patient procedure which could be several months." - Idris Ackamoor

Celebrating a half-century in the performing arts that began with the formation of his legendary band The Pyramids in 1972, Idris Ackamoor will honor the era with the American premiere of Afro Futuristic Dreams, the 50th anniversary double vinyl album released by STRUT Records in 2023.

Afro Futuristic Dreams is unlike any album Idris Ackamoor has recorded with The Pyramids or his other ensembles throughout his career as a musician and composer. This is the first time Idris has composed music for orchestral musicians that include a string quartet, additional horns, multiple vocalists as well as his seven-piece band (IDRIS ACKAMOOR☥THE PYRAMIDS). In the band, Idris plays saxophones, keytar, piano, vocals, spoken word and percussion; Margaux Simmons, co-founder of the Pyramids, conducts the orchestra and plays flutes, percussion and vocals; Sandra Poindexter plays acoustic and electric violins, vocals and percussion; Bobby Cobb plays guitar and vocals; Bradie Speller, founding member of the Pyramids, plays congas and percussion; Mark Heshima Williams, founding member of the Pyramids, plays acoustic and electric basses; and George Hearst plays drums.

Afro Futuristic Dreams is a tribute to the contemporary Afrofuturism movement, which includes science fiction writers Octavia Butler and Samuel R. Delany and musician Sun Ra. IDRIS ACKAMOOR ☥THE PYRAMIDS were also celebrated as pioneers of Afrofuturism in interviews and articles. "Ackamoor's path to Afrofuturist jazz began in the 1960s in the USA, but was accelerated in 1972 when he and the band, then a trio, spent a year traveling and performing throughout Africa. From Morocco, the group made their way to Ghana via Senegal before crossing the continent and traveling to Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. Along the way, they experienced first-hand the ritualistic power of music and its ability to unite communities - the twin tenets of early Afrofuturist jazz, which combined science fiction-inspired magical realism with black consciousness-inspired socio-political activism." - ALL ABOUT JAZZ - Chris May
