Anyone who grew up in the Bergisches Land is also familiar with its home song, which tells of rustling forests, towering mountains and a ringing anvil. And of unwavering loyalty: "That's why I'm far away on the most distant beach: my heart beats for my homeland, the Bergisches Land."

Trumpeter Julian Wasserfuhr and his brother, pianist Roman, have often traveled to faraway shores from Hückeswagen in the Bergisches Land, and not just to the North Sea island of Föhr, where they curate a beautiful jazz festival; From the half-timbered tranquillity of their Bergisch hometown, they have also been drawn to Gothenburg in Sweden to record with Nils Landgren and Lars Danielsson, to the Brooklyn district of New York and to Ireland, where they have added cheerful, folkloristic touches and, above all, the wonderful cello playing of Jörg Brinkmann to their filigree, fine melodies.

If such an increasingly international journey seems like a mosaic to you, you are certainly right. It is no coincidence that Julian and Roman Wasserfuhr titled their current album Mosaic to illustrate their musical processing over the last two years. With friends and fellow musicians from this period, they make music on the album sometimes in a quintet, sometimes in a quartet or in a trio.

Now the brothers have once again accepted an invitation from Paul Heller to perform as part of his "invites" series - and all of the players on this concert evening were also involved in the Mosaic album. Which is certainly only an initial orientation for the musical texture of the evening. But at least: perhaps at times it will be fine chamber music as in the interplay with Jörg Brinkmann's bowed cello, at other times it could be rhythmic and even rocky as in the collaboration with the Ukrainian guitarist Vitaliy Zolotov, who trained in Cologne. One thing is certain, however: Roman's cool, sparkling piano sounds and Julian Wasserfuhr's melodic, sometimes melancholy soundscapes will hover above all the "interplay". Which "farthest beach" the brothers will end up on: Their jazz offers "Heimatlieder" of a different kind, indulgent, subtle and cosmopolitan at the same time. A breath of fresh air as a Bergisch toccata!
