CANCELLED: Sounds Wrong Feels Right: Amirtha Kidambi & Lea Bertucci / Wackelkontakt / Brussels / Lil Oof
The new duo of Amirtha Kidambi on vocals and Lea Bertucci on analog electronics, finds new territory in antiquated sounds. In the duo, Bertucci manipulates Kidambi’s voice through tactile methods with analog tape machine, by pressing on the reels and physically touching the tape. Kidambi reacts in turn with a vocal arsenal of timbral techniques, creating a literal visceral feedback loop of noise, processed, and amplified voice. The explorations are reminiscent of early electronic music and musique concrete, with the added element of live improvised performance. A new album is coming on November 2019. Here you can listen to side 1 from this forthcoming album on Astral Spirits.
Amirtha Kidambi is a singer, composer, harmonium player and bandleader of her quartet Elder Ones. She also is a member of guitarist Mary Halvorson’s Code Girl, among many other projects. Kidambi "takes a holistic approach to singing, which can mean treating every element as unfixed: Words can be opened up, rendered nonspecific. Melody can be repeated and frozen and stuck in place. Markings of rhythm can become utterly abstract, freed from cadence." (New York Times). Kidambi has recently been included in the 67th Annual Downbeat International Critics Poll for three categories: Rising Star Female Vocalist, Rising Star Composer and Rising Star Jazz Group (Elder Ones).
Lea Bertucci is a composer, performer and sound designer whose work describes relationships between acoustic phenomena and biological resonance. In addition to her instrumental practice with woodwind instruments, she often incorporates multichannel speaker arrays, electroacoustic feedback, extended instrumental technique and tape collage. In recent years, her projects have expended toward site-responsive and site-specific sonic investigations of architecture. Deeply experimental, her work is unafraid to subvert musical expectation.
