He is a pioneer of the New York downtown music scene: he first appeared with the Lounge Lizards, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and the Jazz Passengers. Then he founded his first own band, the Rootless Cosmopolitans. He played with John Zorn, joined Shrek's Radical Jewish Culture with his next band, followed in Albert Ayler's footsteps with Spiritual Unity or showed himself in intimate solo works (most recently in 2023 at the Stadtgarten): the American guitarist Marc Ribot.

Ribot has already set the Stadtgarten on fire several times with »Ceramic Dog«. This highly energetic trio switches effortlessly from edgy songs to boisterous rock riffs to quirky jazz and everything in between. Multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily plays distorted bass guitar as well as cheerful organ. And drummer Ches Smith alternates between tight backbeats and electronic experiments. According to Ribot himself, the recently released Connection is their best album to date. The music is packed with references from The Velvet Underground to Gang of Four.
