Catherine Lamb "Descensus Trio" for three celli (Premiere)
Prelude #01 to Night of Surprise - Ort: Christuskirche
In her work, composer Catherine Lamb explores the interaction of tone, summations of shapes and shadows, phenomenological expansions, the architecture of the liminal (states in between outside/inside), and the long introduction form. In this special concert at Christuskirche on the eve of the Night of Surprise, her 2020 composition "descensus trio" will be heard for the first time in the version for three cellos, interpreted by outstanding cellists Judith Hamann, Lucy Railton and Deborah Walker.
Catherine Lamb is one of the most acclaimed and sought-after composers of her generation. She writes commissioned works for leading contemporary music ensembles such as the JACK Quartet, Yarn/Wire, Dedalus, and Ensemble Musikfabrik. Born in Washington in 1982, she currently lives in Berlin.
Italian cellist Deborah Walker, performer and improviser of new music, is interested in multiple forms of music creation related to the exploration of sound and interaction with other art forms. She performs at international festivals and concert halls such as Tectonics, Italia Wave, ZKM, Centre Pompidou and Redcat, is a member of the French ensemble Dedalus and the improvisation orchestra ONCEIM, and has premiered solo works by composers such as Pascale Criton, Éliane Radigue, Philip Corner and Phill Niblock. For the past 20 years, she has performed regularly in duo with violinist Silvia Tarozzi. Her repertoire includes contemporary and experimental works as well as transcriptions of traditional Italian folk songs.
Australian composer and performer Judith Hamann is "extraordinary Australian cellist" (The Guardian) and has been described a composer who “destroys the fiction of the musician who lives and works outside conventional parameters and puts in its place a series of compositions that are fundamentally humane” (WIRE). Her work encompasses their work encompasses performance, electro-acoustic composition, site specific generative work, and micro-tonal systems in a process based creative practice. She has performed in numerous festivals including Tectonics (Glasgow, Athens, etc.), UnSound (NYC), Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), Maerzmusik (Berlin), CTM (Berlin), Venice Biennale Musica (Venice), Tokyo Experimental Festival (Tokyo), and AURAL (Mexico City).
British cellist Lucy Railton is an improviser, an interpreter of contemporary music, a composer ana. collaborator working in sound, dance, film and installation. She has released albums of her own music on Modern Love, Editions Mego - GRM Portraits, PAN (with Peter Zinovieff), Shelter Press, Takuroku and SN Variations (with Kit Downes). Currently she is involved in projects with Rebecca Salvadori, Soundwalk Collectiv and Patti Smith, Kali Malone, Stephen O'Malley, Khyam Allami as well as performing with Ensemble Contremchamps (Maryanne Amacher's GLIA) and the Harmonic Space Orchestra (Ellen Arkbro, Catherine Lamb, Tashi Wada, James Tenney involved). She is co-founder of the London Contemporary Music Festival and the Kammer Klang new music at Cafe Oto
