Cologne Jazzweek: Philip Zoubek Trio + Ava Mendoza + Jozef Dumoulin
The trio around the Austrian pianist Philip Zoubek, who lives in Cologne, has been around since 2016. With bassist David Helm and drummer Dominik Mahnig, Zoubek has since focused on a free play of improvisational forces, breaking up the equally traditional and popular instrumentation of piano, bass, drums by preparing the piano harmonically and melodically. Because of the Corona pandemic, the three musicians have decided to leave the comfort zone of their trio and seek new ways of interaction. Henceforth, they conceive of their trio as a collective. Zoubek now plays exclusively analog and digital synthesizers, while Helm has put away his bass and strapped on a guitar, which he has connected to numerous effects pedals and devices. Together with Mahnig they now build a loud "Wall of Sound". After that, they also make the choice of their guests for the concert at the Cologne Jazz Week. While American guitarist Ava Mendoza gives the trio a spin towards a freely improvised rock music, Belgian Josef Dumoulin lays a firm foundation for this "Wall Of Sound" with the Fender Rhodes.
