With the novel "The Capital," Robert Menasse, born in Vienna in 1954, achieved one of the greatest literary successes of recent years: awarded the German Book Prize in 2017, acclaimed by critics and on the bestseller list for months. And yes, we were also enraptured by the anarchic wit and political seriousness of this Brussels spectacle - and even more so by the character portrayals, which are far too crazy to be made up. For a feat of research in the chambers and canteens of the EU institutions, "The Capital" was moreover. After that, Menasse withdrew from the public eye; not even his polemical, sharp-tongued, passionate rebuttals against nationalism were heard anymore. When we learned that a new novel would finally be published in the fall, with the working title "Die Erweiterung" ("Enlargement"), we exceptionally extended the invitation without reading it first - because Robert Menasse has never been able to write badly.
