Foggy Notion: Mabe Fratti
Support: DJ AAVI (Grapefruits Magazine)
Originally from Guatemala, Mabe Fratti now lives in Mexico City. She uses cello, voice and synthesizer to present sound in the form of installations, compositions and free improvisation. Mabe's music crosses boundaries: In a hypnotic and captivating performance, she fuses contemporary components such as synthesizers, electronic effects units and pedals with influences ranging from Gregorian chants to Sephardic music - ingredients for a powerful sound ritual that creates a deep emotional impact.
Her 2019 debut album Pies Sobre la Tierra introduced the world to Fratti's lush and hypnotic cello compositions. Her latest album, Será que ahora podremos entendernos, which has been highly praised by Pitchfork, NPR, BBC, The Wire, The Guardian, XLR8R, Bandcamp and others, provides space for lyrical invention and elevates her otherworldly creations to new heights. The album's title translates to "Will we be able to understand each other now?" Fratti's cello is still an important aspect of the work, but it is enveloped by vintage synthesizers, guitars, field recordings and gentle drones. The recently released EP Estática, which Fratti recorded with her friend and colleague Conceptión Huerta, was highly praised by The Quietus, The Wire, and Atwood Mag, and is further evidence of the breadth of Fratti's musical exploration and experimentation.
