Foggy Notion: Slauson Malone 1
The multidisciplinary artist Slauson Malone 1 (aka Jasper Marsalis) brings the deep exploration of sound to the fore in his conception of music. On his new album Excelsior (Warp, 2023), the musician accompanies himself with more than two dozen instruments, from guitar to theremin to mellotron. With this abundance of sounds, Slauson Malone 1 creates a sound world that attempts to explore all possible overlaps between popular music and performance art. Excelsior takes the form of a collection of personal essays, with vignettes that intertwine and stand on their own, but ultimately serve the purpose of forming Slauson Malone 1's most personal and compelling musical work. The artist transfers this program to the stage in his performance and thus re-interprets himself. Slauson Malone 1 will be accompanied live on stage in the Stadtgarten by cellist Nicky Wetherell.
