Gretchen Parlato & Lionel Loueke
Reflecting on the great musical duos of our time and what it is that makes them essential, it would seem plausible that there would be at least a short list of common foundational factors necessary for success. For eminent artists, vocalist-arranger Gretchen Parlato and guitarist- vocalist Lionel Loueke, their formula is anchored in what could initially seem to be contrasting components — intrinsic rootedness paired with freedom, spontaneity, and impulse. The development of an earthy connection lays the groundwork for the confidence and trust required for experimentation and ascension. Of their affecting, palpable synergy, Loueke has endearingly adopted the term “Musical Soulmate.”
“It’s somebody who finishes your musical sentences, so to speak ... someone whom I completely trust and admire,” says Parlato elaborating on the sentiment. “We are challenging each other at the same time,” adds Loueke. “I just go wherever she is and vice versa. So, there’s no comfort zone. We get into the Unknown Zone.”
Quotes:
"With a voice as sweet and cool as a spring breeze, Gretchen Parlato would sound at home in any cozy jazz club from Paris to Sao Paulo. The sound of Lionel Loueke's voice and guitar is at least 60 percent rhythm, with his plucking and crooning having an innate percussive pulse running through it. Two decades of collaboration and close friendship are on display with Parlato and Loueke's first full duo-recording; Lean In shows the breadth of their globe-spanning interests and dazzling versatility, but most important is the heartfelt warmth through every moment." (Geno Thackara, All About Jazz, 27.5.2023)
"Parlato and Loueke's careful examination of the new and initially unfamiliar led to a unique, varied album." (Werner Stiefele, RONDO, May 20, 2023)
"A treat (...) Parlato sings with unshowy elan, always sensuous and involving, while the duo's joint vocals on opener Akwe are positively joyous." (Neil Spencer, The Guardian UK, 29.4.2023)
"Soul-stirring" (10 Albums to Know in May, JazzIz Magazine, May 2023)
"The wonderful voice of Gretchen Parlato, in duo with the excellent Lionel Loueke, is simply a pure moment of happiness." (Thierry De Clemensat, Paris Move, 4.5.2023)
