Jazz at JAKI: Ryan Carniaux Water Spirits
In October 2020 (just before the hard lockdown) Ryan Carniaux was touring Europe with his mentor and friend, legendary drummer Ra Kalam Bob Moses. After their first concert at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, Ra Kalam suggested Ryan try playing sea shells.... great idea, but where would he get them...? Sure enough, the next day in Berlin, after checking into the hotel, Ryan took a walk and stumbled upon a store that offered seashell trumpets. He bought one, played it for the rest of the tour, and thus began the inspiration for this new project. The Water Spirits.
Using the seashells as the basis for the grooves and melodies, Ryan wrote new songs inspired by music from around the world that featured those seashells. Island reggae, Afrobeat, Indonesian traditional, African traditional; all blended into an atmospheric, danceable combination of deep grooves and beautiful melodies. Music for the Water Spirits
