Joel Ross' Good Vibes
Joel Ross has earned himself a loyal fan base by making music that you have to lean into. That doesn't make it any less palatable, but the compositions on the vibraphonist's albums - KingMaker (2019), Who Are You? (2020) and The Parable of the Poet (2022) - were rather complex and transferred the virtuosity of his band's live performance to a studio environment. For nublues, his remarkable fourth release as bandleader on Blue Note, Ross took on the challenge of creating an album with a higher degree of accessibility - still intricate and adventurous, but with a strong emphasis on melody, ballads and blues. Intentionally, nublues feels familiar, as if you've heard these songs somewhere in Greenwich Village.
