With violin rebel and front woman Zuzana Leharová, one waits in vain for sounds of the Gypsy Swing tradition. Together with her quartet she sets out to destroy old values of violin music and puts the instrument in the focus it deserves by exhausting the playful spectrum, experimenting with timbres, with rhythms, with vibrato and vibratoless playing. In the process, one encounters memories, for example of a little girl, dancing and singing over a stubbly cornfield, in the boiling heat of the Slovakian August sun, and a band that brightly carries these moods, giving space to the folkloristic elements and melodies. Not only the interplay of origin, search for identity and the search for something new has become Zuzana Leharová's source of inspiration. For in between it becomes gloomy, the bow bowed close to the bridge "ponticello" sounds threatening, only to suddenly soften, plunging into a harmonic sound bed of "happy end" promises. All the while, the exciting liaison of Steve Reich's minimalist world and that of Arvo Pärt's melancholic one, collectively, is repeatedly disrupted and brought to a head by energetic virtuoso playing.
With their album Knochenmann, released in times of lockdown, the Zuzana Leharová Quartet opens up new violinistic dimensions.
