Nubiyan Twist
Nubiyan Twist stands for a new generation of sensitive, genre-fluid artists*. The London-based 12-person collective from Leeds weaves jazz, soul, hip hop, African styles, Latin, dub and electro into a flow of thoughtful and life-affirming music.
Their album "Jungle Run", which was released in mid-February via Strut, was recorded at Oxford Studio in Oxfordshire. The unmistakable, timeless singing of Nubiya Brandon leads through the title track over the break with reservations and propagates simultaneity: "Where you from? I'm from wherever I be."
The voice of the saxophonist Nick Richards carries the first single of the album about inner turmoil and the search for truth "Tell It To Me Slowly", while the Ghanaian newcomer K.O.G appears on "Basa Basa" and "They Talk". Percussionist Pilo Adami sings about the infectious bossa-jazz jam "Borders".
With the Afrobeat Maestro Tony Allen in "Ghosts" and Ethio Jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke on "Addis To London", Nubiyan Twist have brought in two African Beat legends.
The album describes the continuous development of sounds and forms since the band's inception at Leeds College Of Music 2015, "One of the biggest factors in the sound was the exciting music scene in Leeds. From the Reggea Night 'Sub Dub' to venues where the most experimental jazz ever was played," explains Joe. Meanwhile the band sees their debut album and the EP "Siren Song" as classics as well as their live shows are a special experience in themselves.
