Horst and Gretl Will are both jazz fans and began awarding the scholarship through their foundation in 1998. This year's laureate is the saxophonist and composer Theresia Philipp.
Cited from the reasons given by the jury of the Horst and Gretl Will Fellowship for their decision in favour of Theresia Philipp:
"The jury knows Theresia Philipp as an independent and virtuoso saxophonist and clarinettist who is increasingly making a name for herself as a musician in various formations and as a band leader. Her artistic profile and her constantly expanding sphere of activity have reached an impressive level at the time of her current application. It was above all the project "Pollon with Strings", in which Theresia Philipp confronts, expands, enriches her recorded trio Pollon with a string trio and for which she writes original compositions, that convinced the jury".
Theresia Philipp presents here an excerpt of her musical work, performing as a soloist as well as in a trio and sextet with the band Pollon (with Strings). In her compositions she combines elements of new music, Eastern liturgical chants with avant-garde jazz. The sextet's album will be released in November this year on floatmusic.
Combining different stylistic elements and playing techniques without losing the simplicity and beauty is always a great balancing act, which she explores in her music.
Theresia Philipp (saxophone, clarinet), Daid Helm (double-bass), Thomas Sauerborn (drums), Elisabeth Coudoux (cello), Axel Porath (viola), Alex Lindner (violin)
