NICA exchange x CJW: SUPERPOSITION
Explosive, gritty, powerful: that's the sound of the band's debut SUPERPOSITION, released in 2020 on We Jazz, which in the same year was awarded the most important Finnish music prize Emma as Jazz Album of the Year. Helsinki-based drummer Olavi Louhivouri is now bringing his band to Germany for the first time for a concert as part of Cologne Jazzweek, initiated by the cooperation of NICA artist development and the Finnish label and festival We Jazz.
The intensity of the group is carried by its players - tenor saxophonist Adele Sauros is one of the rising stars of the scene in Finland. Linda Frederiksson on alto and baritone saxophone belongs to this circle, has attracted attention in the past through bands like Mopo or OK:KO and the debut "Juniper" (We Jazz), released under her own name in 2021, received national and international attention. Bassist Mikael Saastamoinen is also known under the name Perussastamala. He is also an active member of Helsinki's scene as a composer and producer. Louhivouri himself is known for his solo projects, his band Oddarrang and work with musician:s such as the now deceased trumpeter Tomasz Stańko. The music of SUPERPOSITION, - the second album will be released at the beginning of 2024 - invites through its multifaceted force to be discovered live and at the same time the band offers the opportunity to directly get to know several strong Akteur:innen of the Finnish scene.
NICA exchange takes place in cooperation with the NICA artist development program and Cologne Jazzweek. The main focus of the concert series, initiated in 2022, is to create spaces of exchange for a young, experimental generation of musicians, to encourage sustainable networking and creative exchange, and at the same time, in the context of the festival, to initiate the connection with an audience eager for discovery.
